Understanding Your Filter's Pressure Gauge
![]() |
| Your filter has the ability to tell you when the internal polyester cartridge filtering element needs to be cleaned. On the top of your filter housing is a Pressure Gauge. This gauge indicates the internal water pressure built up in the water flow. When you first start up your pump and filter, the guage will have a "Starting Position". As the cartridge gets dirty, the pressure builds up, causing the gauge to read higher. Typically, once the gauge reads about 5-6 points higher than the starting position is when the cartridge element needs to be cleaned. Once the element is cleaned the gauge will read about 1 point higher than the starting position because you can never return a polyester filtering element back to its new condition.
However, there are times when, after cleaning the cartridge element, that the gauge has not decreased at all. Here are things to check: |

Cartridge is Still Dirty
| As a general rule, our therapy pools do not get as dirty as a regular. Because they are smaller, typically indoors, mostly covered when not in use and not as abused as regualr pools (subject to dirt, grass, suntan lotion, etc...) So a cartridge filtering element can last for up to twice as long in a therapy pool as in a regular pool. But there can still be a build up of body oil and skin on the cartridge element. So if after you clean your cartridge, the gauge does not drop, this would be the first thing to check. Your local pool supply will have water safe cartrdige cleaning solutions for removing oil build up. Never should you use household soap to clean a cartridge. This occurs typically on pools older than 6 months. | |||||||||||

Cartridge is Too Old
| Though a cartridge filtering element can last longer in a therapy pool, it gets used longer as well. Where as a swimming pool is used daily for about three to four months out of the year, a therapy pool can be used daily all year round. So after two years of use, the cartridge may just be too old and needs to be replaced. You can order a new cartridge from us or locally. If you choose to order locally, use the following Part Number: C-4349. | |||||||||||

The Gauge is Blocked
| On occasion, some small bit of debris bypasses the cartridge element and jams the gauge port. This will cause a dramatic increase in your psi artifically. Here are some signs for this happening: 1.) Your cartridge is brand new and the gauge reading has not decreased, or 2.) the cartridge is only a few months old, has been cleaned and the gauge has not decreased at all. | |||||||||||
